What are Inlays and Onlays?
Most people would describe inlays and onlays as being partial crowns. The job of inlays and onlays is to strengthen a weak tooth, restore a damaged tooth or protect a damaged tooth from more damage. They are placed onto an existing tooth as a foundation.
What Are The Different Uses?
When the tooth damage is minimal and there isn’t damage to the cusp of the tooth, an inlay can be used. It is placed directly on the tooth. If the tooth is extensively damaged and the cusp has been damaged, then an onlay is the best option.
What is the Process for Inlays and Onlays?
The process of restoring a tooth with an onlay or inlay takes two office visits. At the first visit with Dr. Knight the decayed or damaged section of your tooth will be removed. A mold will then be made of the tooth which will be used to create a restoration. While you are waiting 2-3 weeks for the restoration, a temporary inlay or onlay will be used. Once your restoration is ready you will visit Knight Dental Care for your second appointment. During this visit the custom-made inlay or onlay will be placed on the affected tooth and using a special cement it will be sealed. You can then enjoy your restored, natural looking tooth!
